POKOTABI / Akira
焼肉あきら 本郷本店
Located on the 2th floor in Hongo 1-chome, Akira serves crisp Japanese Black beef tongue, intensely flavorful sagari, seared Wagyu nigiri, and clay-pot ox-tail rice across thoughtful multi-course options.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Beginning a yakiniku session with beef tongue that balances genuine thickness with a crisp, clean bite is one of the distinct pleasures for grilled-meat enthusiasts. Akira highlights rare Kuroge Washu (Japanese Black cattle) cuts, offering salted top tongue alongside tongue root and off-cuts, letting diners compare textures across the tongue. After a squeeze of lemon over the simply seasoned beef, the meal moves naturally to rich cuts such as sagari (hanging tender), packed with savory lean flavor, and skirt steak with its deep, robust depth. A sauce that avoids excess sweetness sharpens the meat's intrinsic qualities without leaving a heavy finish.
Rather than sticking strictly to grill-it-yourself plates, the kitchen starts branching out right from the appetizers. Courses and a la carte menus feature seared Wagyu tatebara (flank plate) sushi, as well as yukhoe bound with egg yolk to accentuate the rich beefiness, building anticipation before tabletop grilling gets fully underway. Variations such as thin-sliced misuji (top blade) swirled through broth in a shabu-shabu style, or white beef omasum tossed with botargo, provide a well-paced rhythm throughout the courses. For the meal's closing savory dish, ox-tail rice cooked in a clay pot delivers deep meat essence, aromatic steam, and generous condiments the moment the lid is removed.
Beyond evening dining, weekend lunch service presents an equally satisfying set of choices. Formats range from a dedicated lunch course featuring seared sushi, tongue stew, and multiple grilled items to limited-quantity Wagyu steak rice bowls and various yakiniku sets geared toward midday dining. To round off the meal, chilled naengmyeon noodles with clean dashi broth and firm chew, or a sizzling dolsot bibimbap, ensure a hearty finish.
Akira sits on the 2th floor of its building, fitted with table seating under calm lighting. Down-draft exhaust ducts equipped at each grill keep the air clear, making it easy to carry on conversation while tending the meat. Whether gathering with friends, dining with family, or stopping by for dinner after an event around Tokyo Dome, it is a reliable choice when in the mood for quality grilled beef—with an advance reservation recommended.
